'Tween Mission Trip - 2008

On June 20, 2008, our ‘tweens traveled to Peebles, OH where we stayed at Woodland Altars Camp.  On Saturday morning, we served our host camp by marking a trail and providing trail clean up.  Brian, a staff member from the camp, directed our efforts and guided us on two different trails.  It was a wonderful time for us to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation while serving the outdoor ministry which the camp provides throughout the year.
When our work was completed, we headed to Ripley, OH to visit the historical home of Rev. John Rankin, a Presbyterian minister and conductor for the underground railroad.  Over 2,000 run-away slaves climbed the steep hill to the Rankin house and were assisted on their road to freedom by the Rankin family.  In tribute to what those courageous individuals did, we climbed down and back up the hill (all 284 steps!).
On Sunday morning, we worshipped at First Presbyterian Church in West Union, OH.  This church was built in 1810, and its congregation and ministers were active leaders in the anti-slavery movement.  Its current members gave us a warm welcome and invited us to join in their luncheon following worship.

Arriving back at Heritage Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon, we gave thanks for a safe journey and for the opportunity to serve in ministry.
